DESCRIPTION:On Thursday Feb 5\, 2026\, Overlook Elementary will participate in the 37th National African-American Read-In. The African American Read-In was established in 1990 by the Black Caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English to make literacy a significant part of Black History Month.  More than six million people participate in this event every year.  This year also marks the 100th anniversary of Black History Month! \nOverlook is thrilled to announce that 2026 will be a “Special Edition” of the Read-In.  Our PTO has generously helped make possible the visit of nationally acclaimed Author\, Historian\, and Board Certified Librarian\, Ms Alice Faye Duncan.  Her Storytelling uses music\, movement and poetry to bring alive for children the Dreams of  Coretta and Martin Luther King\, jr\, the Blues music of BB King\, the Determination of Opal Lee\, the Poetry of Pulitzer Prize winning Gwendolyn Brooks\, just to name a few… her stories encourage all children to\,  in her own words\,   “Dream Big\, Aim High\, Stay Focused and Keep Moving Forward!  Ms Faye’s dynamic presentation of her work helps us to truly celebrate 100 years of Black Excellence in America in a way that inspires every one of us!

DESCRIPTION:We are excited to invite you to participate in McDougle Elementary School’s African-American Read-In and STEAM Career Symposium Showcase on Monday\, February 16th! This meaningful\, full-day celebration will highlight the brilliance\, voices\, and contributions of African Americans in both literature and STEAM fields. \nThis year’s event includes several special opportunities for our community: \n1. STEAM Career Presenters (Grades 3–5)\nWe are seeking local African-American professionals working in Science\, Technology\, Engineering\, Arts\, and Mathematics to share their stories and inspire our upper-grade learners. Presenters may give short talks\, lead demonstrations\, or host hands-on mini-sessions related to their field. \n2. Guest Readers (Grades K–5)\nWe welcome African-American parents\, caregivers\, family members\, and community leaders to serve as guest readers in classrooms throughout the day. You may bring a favorite children’s book or choose one from our school’s collection. \n3. African-American/Multicultural Book Fair – Feb. 16–20\nWe are also excited to host an African-American/Multicultural Book Fair from February 16–20. This extended event will feature books that celebrate African-American authors\, illustrators\, stories\, and rich multicultural voices from around the world. Students and families will have opportunities to browse and shop throughout the week. \n\nYour participation helps our students see themselves in the pages they read and in the careers they dream of pursuing. DESCRIPTION:You are invited to the 2026 African American Read-In: Celebrating Gloria Tibbs with Food for the Soul! Register to join us on February 16\, 2026 from 2:00-3:30 pm in the Miller Nichols Library room 325\, or join us virtually on Zoom. \nThe African American Read-In is a celebration of African American literature and literacy. Participate by reading excerpts from poetry\, speeches\, stories\, songs\, and other works created by African American authors and artists. Or\, just come to listen\, reflect\, and enjoy the presentations. Join us on February 16th as a listener or a presenter! \nIn 2023\, the event was renamed to honor the legacy of long-time librarian Gloria Tibbs\, who helped bring the African American Read-In to campus in 2010\, and who lovingly called the Read-Ins “food for the soul.” \nThis event is free and open to the public. Registration is required. Joining us on Zoom will not require a Zoom account.
