SUMMARY:Davidson College 2025 African American Read-In
DESCRIPTION:The Office of Equity Compliance\, in collaboration with the Black Student Coalition (BSC)\, is hosting the 2025 African American Read-In on Tuesday\, Feb. 18\, at 4 p.m. at the Spencer-Weinstein Center for Community and Justice. Dinner will follow the program. \nThis year’s theme\, “The Poetics of Our Existence\,” is inspired by writer Audre Lorde’s powerful quote: “Poetry is not a luxury. It is a vital necessity of our existence.” Our theme explores how Black writers use poetry and creative expressions—beyond traditional essays—as a form of resistance\, identity affirmation\, and a challenge to dominant academic structures. \nFaculty\, students\, and staff are invited to participate as community presenters. You can share a 2-5-minute excerpt from poetry\, speeches\, stories\, songs\, or other works by African American\, Afro-Caribbean\, or Black authors and artists that connect with this theme. Or feel free to share an excerpt from any work by a Black creative. If you prefer to engage as a supportive community member\, you’re welcome to attend\, listen\, reflect\, and enjoy the presentations.
