Every year, hundreds of celebrations of the African American Read-In take place across the country and around the world. These events feature the texts, talks, and discussions by and about African American authors and serve as a way to recognize and amplify their work.

The National African American Read In

The National African American Read-In
Date: Friday, February 22nd
Goal: Elementary and Middle School students will engage in reading and writing activities that will focus on African American authors to increase reading comprehension and exposure to different texts.
Curriculum/School Improvement Plan alignment: The activity is aligned with the school improvement plan goals #1 & #2- Increasing ELA scores and writing K-8
Elementary school students will rotate to the library, every 15 minutes. A local hero (Mayor Leonard Jones- contacted and confirmed) The hero will read a short book to the students and ask comprehension questions (guided by the coordinators). Once the book is read and students answer the questions, classes will go back to class and have a short writing assignment that ties it all together. Book choices: Chocolate Me, Taye Diggs & Goin’ Someplace Special, Patricia McKissick (Kindergarten-4th grade students)
6th & 7th grade classes will read one of the 145th St. short stories by Walter Dean Myers. Students will discuss cultural norms and read the first story in the series, write reflections, and discuss with the class
8th grade classes- students will participate in a literature circle. The books read: The Skin I’m In, Out of My Mind, The Watson’s Go to Birmingham, The Crossover, and Mrs. A. Brown’s novel. Students will participate in literature circles and share their thoughts and perspectives on the novels with the whole class. Also, the students will compare and contrast “Strange Fruit” the poem and song and discuss if they believe the anti-lynching movement was successful as a result of the song.
