This latest NCTE resolution supporting wider access to books stemmed from concern about nationwide cutbacks in funding for school library materials and trained school librarians—actions taken despite school-reform efforts calling for increased emphasis on the teaching of literature. Resolution

Resolved, that the National Council of Teachers of English support the American Library Association in urging legislators and school officials to provide funding for credentialed librarians in every elementary and secondary school.
