Resolution on Professional Learning in the Teaching of Writing for Inservice Teachers

Ratified by a Vote of the NCTE Membership, February 2018

 

Background: As stated in NCTE’s Principles of Professional Development, “Professional development of teachers/faculty is a central factor leading to student success.” NCTE reaffirms this commitment to professional learning by providing books, digital resources, annual and regional conventions, and institutes that are all accessible to teachers to enhance their writing curricula and instructional practices.

Research indicates that growing numbers of teachers seek ongoing high quality professional learning that focuses on writing in the disciplines across all grade levels. This professional learning should include workshops, school visits, coaching, and peer observation. Be it therefore

Resolution

Resolved that the National Council of Teachers of English recommend ongoing, high quality professional learning in the teaching of writing for all teachers across all disciplines at each grade level, K-20.

Be it further resolved that NCTE actively encourage school districts, colleges, and universities in providing high quality professional learning to give teachers the necessary strategies and curricula to deliver effective writing instruction.
