A Place Inside of Me: A Poem to Heal the Heart

Written as a poem, this picture book follows a Black child as he enjoys the joys of summer days until his community is impacted by a police shooting. The poem follows the depth and nuances of the child’s experiences as he makes his way through the year, examining his emotions through a reverence for his history and the history of his people as he experiences grief, fear, anger, resistance, pride, and peace, ultimately concluding “I am in love with/my people/all people,” and determines to “love myself/most of all.”
