Johnson’s autobiography poses a variety of problems for the teacher-as-scholar as well as for the casual scholar. The author is anything but an established writer of young-adult literature (or any other literature, for that matter). At the time the book was published, in fact, Johnson was just fourteen years old, and his autobiography comes, as it were, out of nowhere.
