Michael Dorris’s first novel, A Yellow Raft in Blue Water, is a story of three generations of Native American women told through each of their points of view. As the novel progresses, the reader is taken through three distinct sections: the story told by 15-year-old Rayona who is half black, the story told by Christine, Rayona’s rebellious, yet afflicted mother, and Aunt Ida, the ramrod stiff matriarch who harbors a family secret kept for over 40 years.
