Benito has been with his dog Perro since he was born, and he loves him very much. When Perro can no longer stand, Benito’s father takes him to the vet, and “That night, Papá returned, but Perro did not.” Benito is overwhelmed with grief, barely able to leave his room. Mamá encourages Benito to help collect flowers for the Día de los Muertos altar. Benito’s grief has turned toward depression, and Benito says, “I don’t feel like doing anything.”
