The novel opens with fifteen year old Lisa Franklin puzzling over the behavior of her ever distant father and her increasingly hostile brother, Mark. Lisa is convinced her father has a girlfriend, but she wonders why he wont talk about her. Mark doesn’t seem to care, and spends most of his time away from his house.
