Farewell to Manzanar is Jeanne Wakatuski Houston’s autobiographical account of her family’s three years in a Japanese American internment camp during World War II. After the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, the American government began to detain over 100,000 Japanese American families, many of who were American citizens, in relocation camps throughout the western states. The government placed the Wakatuski family in Manzanar, a camp near the Sierra Nevada mountain chain on the border of California and Nevada .
