It’s not surprising that the favorite short story of my high ability eighth graders is “Flowers for Algernon.” They often feel apart from the normal flow of the school and identify readily with a character who, like themselves, is considered different. The students are at times ridiculed for their intelligence and are sometimes made to feel guilty about being able to accomplish more than their less able peers.
