This novel begins with the three Bates children coming home from the movies and finding their furnishings cleared out by their stepmother, Grace. Their father, a truck driver, was away on a trip to Alaska. Grace left the children camping equipment to cook with and some sleeping bags. Shortly after arriving home, the landlord arrives telling them that their rent is due.
