In Part I of Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness, the reader finds Captain Charles Marlow aboard the Nellie as it rests anchored in the waters of the Thames River in England. Along with Marlow are four members of his crew, The Lawyer, The Accountant, The Director and the unnamed narrator who recounts Marlow’s story to the reader as he hears it from Marlow himself. The crew, feeling strangely reflective and mellow on this evening, decide not to play dominoes and instead listen to Marlow’s story of his long journey through the jungles of Africa to find the elusive ivory trader Mr. Kurtz.
