“Hills Like White Elephants” is a short story by Ernest Hemingway originally published in 1927 in the literary magazine transition and then in the short story collection Men Without Women. In this short story, a man and a young woman, referred to as the “girl,” are in Northern Spain in the 1920s, waiting for a train. While sitting outside at a train station having a few drinks, the woman makes an observation about the hills across the valley, saying that they look like white elephants.
