How I Paid for College, a novel by Marc Acito, is about a seventeen-year-old boy named Edward Zanni, and the schemes he and his friends devise to allow him to attend Juilliard in New York City. At the beginning of the book, Edward seems to be living a quite comfortable life. He hangs out with friends and doesn’t have a job because his father pays for everything. However, everything takes a sudden turn for the worse when his father remarries Dagmar, a photographer who believes that Edward is wasting his father’s money, and he then refuses to pay for his schooling at Juilliard. Edward, devastated that his father extinguished his acting dream, moves in with his girlfriend.
