In Joanne Greenberg’s novel (which she authors under the pseudonym of Hannah Green), she tells the story of Deborah Blau’s battle with schizophrenia. The novel is based on Greenberg’s own experiences with schizophrenia when she was hospitalized as a teenager. It is an honest account of mental illness and gives insight into Deborah’s condition from the patient’s viewpoint. It is one of the first novels in its time to give the account of a mental patient in this manner.
