Since its publication in 1970, In the Night Kitchen by Maurice Sendak has been the object of an unusual form of censorship. In 1971, a staff member of Caldwell Parish Library in Louisiana used white tempera paint to diaper the little boy, Mickey, who is pictured nude in the story. Believing that there were people in the community who would object to Sendak’s illustration, she solved “the problem” by clothing the child.
