The prologue begins with the narrator, a young African American man, living “underground” in an abandoned basement of an apartment complex. He relates the tale of when he first realized that he was “invisible”: A man bumped into him and refused to apologize, seeing only the narrator’s blackness and being blind to the narrator’s humanity.
