Thirteen-year-old Emily Rose Chartier has grown up in a biracial family where her parents have always told her that she was “double” and that she did not have to choose one race over the other. Growing up in Connecticut, people accepted her for who she was. Therefore, she grew up believing that she was blessed with the heritage of two cultures. Yet, when her, her mother, and her brothers go to visit their great grandmother, Emily Lee, in Texas, she is in for a surprise.
