Jerry Spinelli
Grade Level:
In his novel Maniac Magee, Jerry Spinelli (1990) tells the story of a young boy’s quest to find his own identity as he wanders around the town of Two Mills. Spinelli’s story is “part tall tale and part realistic contemporary fiction” (Abbot, p. 1902). Spinelli writes about the current timely issues of homelessness, racial prejudice, and illiteracy, and spells out how our young hero, Maniac, comes to grip with such serious issues.
