The novel begins with the yearly harvest of cotton in the fields of rural Oklahoma, with a tornado ripping through the area where a small black community was established to live and work the fields. One of the next scenes enters Abyssina, through her birth in the fields, marked by an ember from the fire which was dancing beside her at her birth.
