MAUS weaves together two stories: the Holocaust memoir of the author’s elderly father, Vladek—told in flashbacks as Art interviews Vladek over a period of months—and the rocky “present-day” (late 1970s) relationship between father and son that unfolds around those interviews. Each chapter of both volumes presents an episode from Vladek’s tragic story of survival during the Holocaust, with shorter present-day scenes bookending each chapter.
