The minute readers pick up Jeffery Eugenides latest novel, Middlesex,(Eugenides, 2002) they won’t be able to put it down. It opens with main character Calliope, a hermaphrodite, explaining to readers that he was actually born twice, first as a girl and fourteen years later as a teenage boy. As the book takes readers on his tumultuous journey to the forty-one year old man Cal has become, they gather insight and understanding to a perspective that isn’t often contemplated.
