Curtis Sittenfeld’s (2005) Prep is a captivating novel that allows readers to enter the world of boarding school through the eyes of Lee Fiora, an insecure outsider. In this novel, Lee grapples with friendships, a relationship with the most popular boy in her
grade, and distant communication with her family, all the while attempting to accept herself. Prep is set in the wealthiest of atmospheres, yet money is never openly seen or discussed until its exposure in a New York Times editorial, in which Lee is openly quoted as a scholarship student unhappy at Ault boarding school. This article ultimately leads to the actual shunning of Lee that she has imagined in her lack of self-worth throughout her four years at Ault.
