Elske, the main character through which the tale unfolds, is a young woman born in a heavily savage, male-dominated society called the Wolfers. They kill their girl children, kidnap and rape women. As the chosen Death Maiden, she is the girl whose gang rape and death will lead her to the dead Volking (Wolfer King) to be his after-life companion.
