Paul Volponi’s powerful and realistic novel Rooftop (2006) describes the everyday hardships of growing up in an urban community. It gets down and dirty into the life of Clay, a seventeen year old boy, who is struggling to make something out of himself. He is trying to break the chains that keep him attached to the projects. Even though the story centers itself around Clay, there are a variety of characters that add to the diversity one can see in today’s urban communities and developments.
