Grade Level:
Augusten Burroughs’ Running With Scissors (2002) is the memoir of Augusten Burroughs’ life from age 9 to age 17. Augusten encounters many serious issues and very age-inappropriate events within these adolescent years. The story follows Augusten’s life with his mother Deirdre who, after her divorce, has a minor psychotic break down. Their relationship is very dysfunctional. Many of the relationships that happen in the story are very dysfunctional and some are very violent. The book does a great job of illuminating the darkness in humanity.
