Walter Dean Myers (2004) writes a compelling and mysterious novel based around the incident of a high school shooting in his book Shooter. Set in Harrison County, CA at Madison High School, police investigators, FBI agents, and school psychologists try to uncover the events and attitudes that led up to the fateful day of the incident in April. Through interviews with Leonard Grey’s best friend, Cameron Porter, and other friend Carla Evans, readers uncover the loneliness, alienation, abuse, and bullying that drove Leonard Grey to his eventual rage against the hierarchy of the school environment. Ending with a disturbing view of Leonard’s diary, the reader is left with little question as to what caused the incident and more questions of how to prevent something like this in the future.
