The novel is about a teenager, Travis, whose life is changed tremendously because of his dislike of Stan, his step-father. Because Stan, at times, is physically and mentally abusive to Travis and his mother, Travis intensely dislikes the man. In one episode, Stan throws all of Travis’ writings–poems and stories–into the fire.
