The Afterlife, (Soto, 2003) touches on some very controversial subjects, such as murder, death, suicide, and gang violence. What teachers and parents need to keep in mind is that these subjects are what today’s teens face every day. In the first chapter of the book, seventeen-year-old Chuy is stabbed to death. This story tells what happens after his death.
