A student looked up from her desk and saw that I was reading The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank. “That’s a good book!” she said. I thought, “how often have I heard a student give this opinion, unsolicited, of any book?” Not often in recent years. Last summer fewer than half of my students did any reading.
