The story opens with the long bus ride to Coldbrook Country School. Coldbrook is an exclusive, alternative school in the wooded area of Vermont. The main characters are introduced: Nat Rittenhouse, the leader of Group Six; Coleman DeCoursey, Coke short; Arthur Sullivan, Prefers Sully; Sara Winfrey; Louisa Locke or Ludi; and Marigold, no one knows her real name.
