The opening of The Trouble With Liberty finds us at a calf-roping rodeo in Sutter’s Crossing, British Colombia. We are initially introduced to one of the story’s main characters, Val McQueen, a tenth-grader who has lived in Sutter’s Crossing all her life. She is at the rodeo watching her brother Cody, who is two years older and the story’s heartthrob, compete.
