In the novel, The Usual Rules, (Maynard, 2003) thirteen-year-old Wendy experiences September 11 as an American as well as a daughter of Janet, one of the thousands that died in the attacks on the World Trade Center. Her estranged father, Garrett, has been contacting Wendy to persuade her to come visit him in California. Wendy is being pulled in many directions. Her mother is anxious about Garrett and expresses doubt in his ability to take care of Wendy.
