The White Horse begins through a narrative story written by the lead character, Raina. “We’re flying down the road in this big old car, my mother at the wheel, a Marlboro in her mouth, the windows open, hair blowing all around, her pink arm spreading out the window” (Grant 1998, p.t). This introductory sample by Raina, vividly represents the type of home life she is accustomed to.
