They Cage the Animals at Night(Burch, 1984) is a story of a young boy struggling with life in and out of orphanages and foster homes. The story details his life over about three years during which he meets many people who make a profound impact on his life. In his book Burch deals with issues of neglect, abandonment, and love. Burch writes with such vivid memories of his childhood that he leads the reader to believe he is still that eight, nine, or ten year old boy.
