Jesse, the main character, is introduced as the first-person narrator. His interactions with his mother and with his grandfather soon establish the main theme of the book: the grandfather, lovingly addressed as ”Pappy”, sometimes suffers from an absent state of mind, but Jesse still adores him for all he has taught him about riding, camping in the wild nature of California, exploring tracks, cooking campfire meals, wearing cowboy hats and much more.
