I taught high-school English for four years, and I wrote the novel Vision Quest (1979, New York: Viking), which is banned from high-school and public libraries with some frequency, so the question of book selection in public schools is probably as personal for me as it is for the teachers participating in the dialogue opened by Edwin Greenlee’s piece “Recommended Adolescent Literature: Avoiding Those Hidden ‘Secrets'” (1992, English Journal 81.4 [Apr.]: 23-24).
