Walking on Glass (Fullerton, 2007) is the story of a boy in turmoil, faced with insurmountable decisions after his mother’s attempted suicide. The novel, told in a series of free verse pieces, is the narrator’s journal, kept at the request of his therapist. Before the book begins, the narrator’s mother attempts to hang herself from the chandelier in their house. The narrator walks in at the exact second of her attempt and tries to save her. However, the chandelier falls, breaking his arm and severely injuring his mother. This accident causes the narrator’s mother to fall in a coma, and her recovery is completely unlikely.
