When She Was Good by Norma Mazer (1997) deals with the issue of mental illness and the way it affects the main character, Em’s life. The reader feels Em’s pain as she narrators her life in nonlinear flashbacks and the way that she is presently dealing with the death of her abusive and mentally ill sister. The novel deals with issues such as mental illness, physical and mental abuse, poverty and emotional rebirth.
