Woman Hollering Creek is a collection of short stories divided into three sections: “My Lucy Friend Who Smells Like
Corn,” “One Holy Night,” and “There Was a Man, There Was a Woman.” There are twenty-two stories in the book. With some only a page in length and others almost thirty pages, the stories reflect a range of themes and styles, and introduce the reader to a variety of situations. Mostly set in Mexico, San Antonio, and other parts of the Southwest, Woman Hollering Creek paints a vivid picture of the lives of its characters. Using a combination of poetry and prose, Cisneros writes about the intimate experiences of a young girl, a struggling painter, a woman who flies over her Mexican village watching over a soldier, a widower, a frustrated lover, and many others.
