2nd Annual Northside 8th Grade ELA NCTE African American Read-In

February 10, 2022 - February 11, 2022

As part of Muncie Community Schools corporation-wide Black History Month celebration, Dr. Nicole Cardassilaris, her student teacher Cassidy Ogan, her practicum teacher Elizabeth Bogle, and special education co-teacher Jenifer Pierce hosted the second NCTE African American Read-In at Northside Middle School in Muncie, Indiana. This year Dr. Cardassilaris’s 8th grade English Language Arts classes celebrated the read-in on February 10 and 11, 2022.

Dr. Cardassilaris, Mrs. Pierce, and their mentee teachers used the school library to set up the following reading, viewing, listening, and interactive stations: speeches, biographies, literature and poetry, music and visual arts, history, games, and different genres of Afrofuturism.

Each station included books written by African American authors or about African American heritage and history. Students moved from station to station reading independently or to each other, conversing and sharing texts they discovered, as well as listening to recorded speeches by famous African Americans, watching segments of Marvel’s Black Panther 2018 film, playing games, and making a bookmark with the raised RESIST fist. Additionally, Dr. Cardassilaris and her mentee teachers also borrowed cultural realia, musical instruments, and games from Ball State University’s Music, Media, and Education Collection to add more opportunities for engagement with the celebration of African American heritage.

Students used an activity sheet to write about what they read, watched, and experienced. The takeaway swag for the students included their handmade bookmark and a pamphlet on Afrofuturism (made by Elizabeth Bogle). And finally, to commemorate the read-in celebration, student favorites were assembled in a display case outside the school library with photos, books, and realia.
