Acknowledging Our Voices

February 27, 2023 @ 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm

Here at Roberts Family Development Center, we strive to do the unconventional work. The work that build leaders, critical thinkers, successful beings, socially, emotionally, and especially culturally. We implement reading and learning tools from young black and brown professionals, teachings from our past understandings and culture emphasizing the importance of education. Participating in the African American Read In for Roberts Family Development Center directly connects with one of our many programs, Freedom Schools, which is a 6-week summer reading literacy program. RFDC is a longtime partner of The Children’s Defense Fund. Through this partnership RFDC is able host hundreds of scholars falling in love with learning through literacy.  As a result, we have many books written and illustrated by black and brown authors, opening vital and necessary conversations for children to feel confident in their identity, voice, learning, and leadership. We will be reading two books this event: We Shall Overcome written by Bryan Collier and The Faith of Elijah Cummings: The North Star of Equal Justice. We look forward to sharing this moment with other passionate educators, youth, and activists around the world.
