African American Read-In at Overlook Elementary, Abington PA
On Thursday Feb 5, 2026, Overlook Elementary will participate in the 37th National African-American Read-In. The African American Read-In was established in 1990 by the Black Caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English to make literacy a significant part of Black History Month. More than six million people participate in this event every year. This year also marks the 100th anniversary of Black History Month!
Overlook is thrilled to announce that 2026 will be a “Special Edition” of the Read-In. Our PTO has generously helped make possible the visit of nationally acclaimed Author, Historian, and Board Certified Librarian, Ms Alice Faye Duncan. Her Storytelling uses music, movement and poetry to bring alive for children the Dreams of Coretta and Martin Luther King, jr, the Blues music of BB King, the Determination of Opal Lee, the Poetry of Pulitzer Prize winning Gwendolyn Brooks, just to name a few… her stories encourage all children to, in her own words, “Dream Big, Aim High, Stay Focused and Keep Moving Forward! Ms Faye’s dynamic presentation of her work helps us to truly celebrate 100 years of Black Excellence in America in a way that inspires every one of us!
