CCPS African American Read-In

The 8th Annual Carroll County African American Read-In will take place on Thursday, February 23, 2023, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at the Carroll Arts Center, located at 91 West Main Street in Westminster, Maryland, with a snow date of Wednesday, March 8. All CCPS high schools will be participating.

The Read-In is sponsored by Carroll County Public Schools, Carroll County Public Library, and the Carroll County Arts Council. Additional support from the Carroll County Branch of the NAACP, Carroll Citizens for Racial Equity, Carroll County Educators’ Association, and St. Paul’s UCC make this event possible.  The event is free and open to the public. No tickets are required. The evening will open with jazz music performed by high school students from 6:30 to 7:00 p.m. Readings and performances of African American literature will be presented from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m.

The National African American Read-In is the nation’s first and oldest event dedicated to diversity in literature. It was established in 1990 by the Black Caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English to make literacy a significant part of Black History Month. This initiative has reached more than 6 million participants around the world.
