Davidson College 2025 African American Read-In

February 18, 2025 @ 4:00 pm - 5:15 pm

The Office of Equity Compliance, in collaboration with the Black Student Coalition (BSC), is hosting the 2025 African American Read-In on Tuesday, Feb. 18, at 4 p.m. at the Spencer-Weinstein Center for Community and Justice. Dinner will follow the program.

This year’s theme, “The Poetics of Our Existence,” is inspired by writer Audre Lorde’s powerful quote: “Poetry is not a luxury. It is a vital necessity of our existence.” Our theme explores how Black writers use poetry and creative expressions—beyond traditional essays—as a form of resistance, identity affirmation, and a challenge to dominant academic structures.

Faculty, students, and staff are invited to participate as community presenters. You can share a 2-5-minute excerpt from poetry, speeches, stories, songs, or other works by African American, Afro-Caribbean, or Black authors and artists that connect with this theme. Or feel free to share an excerpt from any work by a Black creative. If you prefer to engage as a supportive community member, you’re welcome to attend, listen, reflect, and enjoy the presentations.
