Kids Book Club, Black History Month edition

February 28, 2021 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

February marks the kick-off of Kids Book Club, a joint program of the Silver Lake Family Collective and Alexandria House in which kids from both communities read books aloud on Zoom. In honor of Black History Month, we’ll read books that celebrate Black heroes and culture. Our book selections are:

  • Kamala and Maya’s Big Idea by Meena Harris
  • Each Kindness by Jacqueline Woodson
  • Mae Among the Stars by Roda Ahmed
  • I Promise by LeBron James
  • Please Baby Please by Spike Lee

All books are being purchased from Black-owned bookstores with SLFC donations.  This month we placed our order from Eso Won Bookstore in Leimert Park, one of LA’s oldest Black-owned bookstores. The books are donated to Alexandria House to help build a library to keep their kids reading.

We will be doing this once a month, celebrating a different theme or idea. Next month we’ll be celebrating Women’s History Month.

— The Silver Lake Family Collective (SLFC) is a community of Silver Lake, Atwater Village, Frogtown, and Echo Park families. Alexandria House is a local institution that provides shelter and programming for women and children as they transition from emergency to economic stability and permanent housing.
