Willow Hill Elementary School – Read-In Chain
February 6, 2023 @ 2:30 pm - 3:00 pm
On February 6th, Willow Hill participated in the 33rd national African-American Read-In. The first African-American Read-In was sponsored by the Black Caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English in 1990. The goal is to make the celebration of African American literacy a traditional part of Black History Month activities. Willow Hill students and teachers joined over a million readers of all ethnic groups, from 49 states, the West Indies, and African countries in reading books by African American authors and illustrators. First, our librarian selected books by African American authors and/or illustrators. Students within grades 3-5 then chose one of those books to read aloud to a younger student in grades K-2.
Each younger class was paired up with an older class. These classes were situated around the school to form a “human reading chain” from one end of the school to the other. The older students read to their younger buddy for 15 minutes.
