CCCC 2024 Program Chair’s Travel Grant
Need-based funding for travel to the 2024 CCCC Annual Convention
CCCC 2024 in Spokane will mark 75 years since the first CCCC Convention was held in 1949. As we celebrate the abundances of our profession, the CCCC leadership team has also been working to think through ways to be responsive to our members’ current working conditions and access needs. Every CCCC program chair has a small amount of discretionary funding to spend as they find most useful for the development of the Convention programming. This year, I have decided to allocate some of these funds to create up to twelve need-based travel grants. Each travel grant will come with a complimentary one-year CCCC membership and a $500 stipend to help cover expenses. Those who have a sustained interest in teaching and research in rhetoric, writing, and technical communication are especially encouraged to apply.
This one-time travel award for 2024 corresponds with the theme of the 2024 Convention, where the call for proposals asked, “How can writing abundance encourage us to take stock of where we are and how the material flow of resources within postsecondary institutions corresponds with what we say we value? How can sensing material abundance help us reckon with inhospitable labor conditions and unequal distribution of resources in the academy?”
As we take up these questions, the CCCC leadership team has been working to reassess the “material flow of resources” circulating within and around the organization, especially in light of the challenging labor conditions and unequal distribution of resources that affect many of our members. In addition, on September 7, 2023, the CCCC Officers issued a Statement in Response to Proposed Cuts at WVU and Academic Austerity in Higher Education. As a faculty member at West Virginia University, I am highly concerned about the impacts of austerity cuts affecting faculty across rhetoric and composition for our profession. This need-based travel grant is an effort to support our members during a time that has been challenging for many of us. We plan to use this one-time award as a pilot that may be assessed for future structural budgetary adjustments within CCCC.
